Protecting Your Clients and Your Business From Fraud

NAR has recently launched an online resource to help members prevent, detect and report fraud. Real estate cybercrime, accelerated by AI impersonations, has reached what the “2026 State of Wire Fraud” report calls “epidemic” levels. In 2025 alone, Americans lost $275 million to real estate-related fraud, according to the FBI. NAR’s 2026 Member Profile found 58% of members say they or others at their company have experienced fraud or a scam in the past year.

The new resource at nar.realtor/fraud is organized around three steps:

  1. Prevent: Practical steps like multifactor authentication and written broker response procedures,
  2. Detect: Red flags organized by transaction stage, from listing through post-closing, and
  3. Report: Who to alert and how to limit further loss if something goes wrong.

Additional $20 Million Invested in Fortified Homes Last Month

Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple joined Governor Jeff Landry and Senate Insurance Committee Chairman Kirk Talbot, on September 21, to announce an additional $20 million investment in Fortified homes, bringing the state's total for Fortified projects this year to $100 million. The new funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and will be transferred to the Louisiana Office of Community Development's Restore ROOF program to strengthen residential structures and reduce long-term disaster risk. It builds on $50 million in Katrina and Rita bond money from Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation that was added to the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program this year, which is also projected to receive about $30 million annually from taxes and fees collected from the insurance industry.

The Louisiana Department of Insurance has also finalized Regulation 136, which implements state law requiring all property and casualty insurers to provide premium discounts or rate reductions for homes built or upgraded to Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety fortified standards. Commissioner Temple said building stronger homes is a vital part of making homeowners insurance affordable in Louisiana.

Appraisal Update: UAD 3.6 and the Temporary Policy Exception

A major change to residential appraisal reporting is approaching, but a recently announced temporary policy exception is creating some confusion about what happens on November 2.

Here is what REALTORS® need to know.

Beginning November 2, 2026, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will require the new Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD) 3.6 for new appraisal reports initially submitted to the Uniform Collateral Data Portal (UCDP), unless the lender has received a temporary policy exception. The November 2 implementation date has not been postponed.

What is the UAD 3.6 Appraisal Report?
UAD 3.6 replaces the familiar legacy appraisal forms (used for the last 25 years) with a new, more data-driven appraisal report that collects much more detailed property information.

For REALTORS® and consumers, the transition could mean a more detailed property inspection, additional questions about the property and transaction, and potentially longer appraisal and review times as appraisers, lenders, appraisal management companies, and other industry participants adjust to the new system.

What changed?
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac recently announced a temporary policy exception for eligible lenders that need additional time to complete their transition to UAD 3.6.

Lenders receiving the exception may continue submitting appraisals using the current legacy UAD 2.6 format through May 19, 2027. Beginning May 20, 2027, new appraisal submissions to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac must use UAD 3.6.

What does this mean for REALTORS®? What about FHA, VA and USDA? Read the full details on our blog. Join us for a update webinar on Thursday, December 3 at 10:00 a.m.

That's a Wrap on the Fall Governance Meetings

Louisiana REALTORS® brought the industry together in New Orleans September 29–October 1 for the 2026 Fall Governance Meetings, for professional development, governance, networking and celebration. Attendees heard a live economic update from NAR's Dr. Lawrence Yun and took part in education sessions with Robert Siciliano and Leigh Brown, with up to six hours of CE available. The week also celebrated the graduating LR Leadership Program class of 2026, and Wednesday night's 2027 Officer Installation was followed by a second line through the streets of New Orleans to Vue Orleans.

On the governance side, regional caucuses and the Board of Directors Meeting closed out the conference, where six members were elected as 2027 At-Large Directors. Thank you to everyone who joined us and to our sponsors for helping make the event possible!

We are pleased to announce that the onsite donation drive for the REALTORS® Relief Foundation, and the RRF portion of the proceeds from cookbook sales, together raised $5,475! This includes a very generous donation of $2,500 from Northwest Louisiana Association of REALTORS®.
